Arne Slot rejects Netherlands national team job for club football

Arne Slot has confirmed that he held discussions with the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) regarding the vacant Netherlands national team head coach position but ultimately withdrew from the process. Slot, the former Liverpool manager, clarified that his decision was based on a professional preference for club football rather than disputes over salary or contract duration. He stated, “At this stage in my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day. Something that is simply not possible in the same way with a national team.”

The search for a successor to Ronald Koeman, who stepped down following the 2026 World Cup, continues. Following the withdrawal of several local candidates including Slot, Peter Bosz, and Erik ten Hag, the KNVB is reportedly in talks with Roberto Martínez. The Spanish coach, who previously managed Belgium and Portugal, would represent a significant shift for the Dutch side, as the team has not had a foreign manager since 1978. Martínez's agent has noted that while discussions are possible, the KNVB traditionally favors Dutch coaches.
