Slot declines Netherlands coaching role to stay in club game
Overview
Following Ronald Koeman’s exit in early July 2026, Liverpool manager Arne Slot was the leading candidate to take over the Netherlands men’s national team. The KNVB aimed to finalise the hire before the Nations League match with Germany on 24 September. While Liverpool had expressed readiness to fund any salary shortfalls, negotiations hit a snag by 20 July when the KNVB and Slot could not agree on contract length, with the federation preferring four years and Slot pushing for two.
On 10 August, Slot officially declined the opportunity. He clarified that his decision was not due to disagreements over salary or contract length, but rather a professional preference. Slot stated, “At this stage of my career, I prefer to see myself on the training pitch with my players every day,” noting that the national role lacks the same level of daily interaction found in club football. He added that while representing his country would be a “great honour” in the future, the current moment is not right for a move to international management.
With Slot, Peter Bosz, and Erik ten Hag having withdrawn from consideration, the KNVB is reportedly in talks with Spanish coach Roberto Martínez. Martínez, who previously managed Belgium and Portugal, would represent a significant shift for the Dutch side, as the team has not had a foreign manager since 1978. While Martínez’s agent noted that discussions are possible, the KNVB has traditionally favored Dutch coaches.
