Arpa Campania finds no significant air pollutants in Caivano

Arpa Campania has reported that air sampling at the PPG Industries Italia site in the Caivano ASI area did not reveal significant concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or other hazardous airborne substances above quantifiable limits. The investigation followed reports of persistent odors in areas north of Naples starting on September 12.

PPG Industries Italia confirmed that an error in the processing of substances occurred on September 11. This led to a partial product leak on September 12 and a subsequent leak during the night of September 14-15. The substance involved, ethyl acrylate, is noted for its sharp odor and low olfactory threshold.

The company stated that the leaks were contained on paved surfaces, with no infiltration into the soil or wastewater systems detected. PPG Industries Italia is responsible for the removal, area remediation, and disposal of the resulting waste and materials used for securing the site.
