Subsequent investigations by Arpa Campania found no significant concentrations of volatile organic compounds or other hazardous airborne substances above quantifiable limits. PPG Industries Italia confirmed that processing errors led to a partial product leak on September 12 and another leak during the night of September 14-15. The substance involved, ethyl acrylate, is characterized by a sharp odor. The company stated that the leaks were contained on paved surfaces with no detected infiltration into soil or wastewater systems, and has taken responsibility for site remediation and waste disposal.
