Arshad Nadeem Blamed by Mentors for Poor Commonwealth Games Showing

Pakistan's javelin gold‑medalist Arshad Nadeem, who threw a record 92.97 m to win the Paris 2024 Olympic title, finished ninth in the final of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He barely qualified with a 78.63 m throw and managed only 77.41 m in the final, far short of medal‑winning distances.

Two of Nadeem's close mentors said his performance was the result of inadequate training and a shift in focus toward business ventures. One mentor, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "Arshad Nadeem became careless. His training was lacking." They criticised his reliance on the Pakistan Athletics Federation and the government to arrange overseas training, noting that he had been waiting to be sent to South Africa. The mentors also highlighted that after his Olympic success he had invested in a wedding hall and restaurant in his hometown, diverting attention from athletics.

Sri Lanka's Ramesh Tharanga Pathirage won the gold with an 89.75 m throw, while India’s Neeraj Chopra and Yashveer Singh took silver and bronze respectively.
