Arshad Nadeem Commonwealth Games criticism

During the 2022 Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Pakistan’s Olympic javelin champion Arshad Nadeem, who had thrown 92.97 m to win the Paris 2024 Olympic title, finished ninth with a best throw under 80 m. Initial commentary highlighted inadequate preparation, the lack of foreign coaching, and a dispute with the Pakistan Amateur Athletics Federation and the Pakistan Sports Board. Former Olympic boxer Hussain Shah praised Nadeem’s background but noted the shortfall.

Subsequent remarks from two of Nadeem’s mentors blamed his performance on insufficient training and a shift in focus toward personal business ventures, including a wedding hall and restaurant. They criticized his reliance on the federation for overseas training, noting delays in sending him to South Africa. The competition saw Sri Lanka’s Ramesh Tharanga Pathirage win gold, while India’s Neeraj Chopra and Yashveer Singh took silver and bronze respectively.

In contrast, India’s parliament honoured its own athletes for a strong medal haul, naming several gold medallists and presenting the success as an inspiration for future sportspersons.
