Messina museum theft: Custodian under investigation for false statements
Authorities in Messina are investigating a major art theft at the Museo Accascina that occurred during the Ferragosto holiday. The heist targeted precious works attributed to the Renaissance master Antonello da Messina, including panels from the San Gregorio Polyptych. Experts estimate the value of the stolen pieces to be between 70 and 80 million euros.
Investigators are currently focusing on a museum custodian who has been placed under investigation for making false statements to the public prosecutor. The custodian's testimony regarding the timeline of events and the deactivation of the alarm system reportedly contained significant contradictions compared to statements made by other staff members on duty.
Police and Carabinieri are examining whether the thieves acted with inside information, noting the precision of their movements and the fact that they entered through a secondary entrance that lacked a forced-entry alarm. While two of the stolen works were recovered after being abandoned during the escape, the investigation continues to determine if the security breach was a result of negligence or direct complicity.
