Renaissance art theft in Messina, Italy
Overview
Authorities in Sicily are investigating the theft of significant Renaissance artworks from the Museo Regionale di Messina (also referred to as Museo Accascina). The thieves bypassed alarm systems to steal several panels attributed to Antonello da Messina, including pieces from the San Gregorio polyptych. Museum Director Marisa Mercurio characterized the theft as a “great loss for the museum, the city, the community, and the art world.”
While two of the stolen works were later recovered after being abandoned during the escape, experts estimate the value of the stolen pieces to be between 70 and 80 million euros. The investigation has shifted focus toward potential internal involvement. A museum custodian is currently under investigation for making false statements to the public prosecutor, as their testimony regarding the alarm system and the timeline of events contradicted other staff members. Investigators are examining whether the precision of the heist was facilitated by inside information or negligence regarding a secondary entrance.
