President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to establish the US Space Academy, a new national institution designed to train the next generation of space professionals. The academy aims to provide technical education, leadership development, and discipline for personnel serving in NASA, the United States Space Force, and the commercial space industry. A presidential commission, led by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, will have 120 days to recommend the academy's governance, curriculum, and permanent location.

The announcement was made during a ceremony at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where Trump also presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the four crew members of the Artemis II mission: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. The crew was recognized for their historic lunar flyby mission in April 2026.

Additionally, Trump highlighted NASA’s ongoing development of the first nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft, which is targeted for a mission to Mars in 2028. The administration framed these initiatives as essential to maintaining American superiority in space amidst increasing international competition, particularly with China.
