Artemisia Gentileschi painting moves from Sorrento to Florence

The 'Maddalena Penitente', a renowned painting from the Museo Correale in Sorrento, has begun its journey to Florence to be featured in the exhibition 'Artemisia Gentileschi a Firenze' at the Museo degli Innocenti. The exhibition is scheduled to run until April 2027, with the painting set to be on display starting October 20.

Originally attributed to Andrea Vaccaro, the work was definitively attributed to Artemisia Gentileschi in 2002 following research by Professor Riccardo Lattuada. The attribution was further supported in 2022 by art historian Vittorio Sgarbi, who described the piece as an unmistakable work by the artist, noting its unique emotional depiction of the Magdalene.
