Artemisia Gentileschi exhibitions in Italy
Overview
The painting ‘Maddalena Penitente’ has begun its transfer from the Museo Correale in Sorrento to the Museo degli Innocenti in Florence. Originally attributed to Andrea Vaccaro, the work was definitively identified as an Artemisia Gentileschi piece in 2002 and further supported by art historian Vittorio Sgarbi, who described it as an “unmistakable work by the artist.”
The painting is part of the ‘Artemisia Gentileschi a Firenze’ exhibition, which is scheduled to run until April 2027. This exhibition features over 50 works and explores the artist’s time in Tuscany, during which she served as a court painter and became the first woman admitted to the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno.
