Artesa de Segre imposes confinement and fire ban amid chemical odor and heatwave

On June 19, 2023, emergency services in the Catalan town of Artesa de Segre (Lleida province, Spain) ordered a precautionary one‑hour confinement after residents complained of a strong chemical smell that caused eye irritation and a feeling of suffocation. The odor was linked to a local pinsos (paint) factory; firefighters reported no dangerous substances and lifted the restriction after about an hour, also reopening municipal pools that had been closed.

The same municipal government later prohibited the lighting of bonfires, fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices through June 28, citing the “level 3” alert of the regional heat‑wave plan, temperatures above 40 °C and low humidity that raise fire risk. The ban follows previous large wildfires in the area, including a 2022 blaze that burned 2,702 ha. Authorities warned of penalties for non‑compliance.
