Arthur Ashe Stadium undergoes $800 million modernization

Arthur Ashe Stadium, the centerpiece of the U.S. Open at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, is undergoing an $800 million modernization project. Managed by the United States Tennis Association (USTA), the renovation aims to upgrade the fan experience and modernize the venue. The project includes a new grand entrance designed in collaboration with architect Daniel Libeskind and a state-of-the-art Player Performance Center to be built on the west side of the stadium.

HOK+ROSSETTI Architects has been tapped for the renovation. ROSSETTI, which originally designed the stadium in the 1990s, is part of the newly merged firm.

Beyond physical upgrades, the U.S. Open has increasingly embraced a high-energy, rowdy atmosphere that differs from the traditional etiquette of tournaments like Wimbledon. Recent policy shifts, such as the ‘fan free movement’ policy introduced in 2024, allow spectators more freedom to move to and from their seats, reflecting an intentional effort by organizers to prioritize fan enjoyment and create a unique, high-energy environment.
