Brazil announces R$ 2.3 billion investment in AI infrastructure
The Brazilian government has announced a major strategic initiative to strengthen national digital sovereignty through significant investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure. As part of the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan (PBIA), the government is allocating approximately R$ 2.3 billion to bolster its technological ecosystem.
Key components of the plan include the development of the ‘Brazilian Cloud,’ a public-private partnership designed to reduce dependence on international providers for data processing and storage. Additionally, R$ 1.3 billion will fund a supercomputing project in Rio de Janeiro in collaboration with Chinese companies Huawei and iFlytek to develop language models. Another R$ 1 billion is earmarked for a high-performance supercomputer to be installed in Rio Grande do Norte, which aims to rank among the world's top ten AI processing machines.
The strategy seeks to balance relations between global powers, utilizing technology from both the United States and China. While the government anticipates potential involvement from American chipmaker Nvidia, the overall goal is to ensure national autonomy over public and private data and to foster local research, professional training, and technological transfer.
