Artificial Intelligence impacts migraine prediction and medical self-diagnosis

Recent developments in artificial intelligence are showing significant potential in both predicting medical conditions and altering patient behavior. A study published in ‘Neurology Open Access’ analyzed data from over 53,000 individuals with migraines, including 770,000 daily records between 2020 and 2025. Researchers tested seven machine learning algorithms, finding a preferred model with 81 percent overall accuracy and a 91.2 percent positive predictive value. The study noted that a person's 30-day headache history was a more significant predictor of an upcoming episode than immediate warning symptoms.

In Albania, the rise of AI-driven self-diagnosis is shifting the traditional doctor-patient dynamic. Medical professionals report that nearly 90 percent of patients now consult tools like ChatGPT regarding their symptoms before seeking professional medical advice. While some clinicians view AI as a potential ally, others express concern over the financial, emotional, and medical risks of self-diagnosis. One case highlighted a medical student who insisted on an incorrect OCD diagnosis based on ChatGPT's assessment, illustrating the potential for AI to challenge medical authority and lead to incorrect treatment paths.
