UNAM AI Exam Proctoring Scandal Triggers 58,000 Student Retakes
Mexico’s National Autonomous University (UNAM) used an AI‑powered remote‑proctoring system from Territorium together with Respondus’s LockDown browser to supervise its highly competitive entrance exam. The AI software monitored candidates via webcam, detecting eye direction and flashing a red light when a test‑taker looked away. After the exam, the share of applicants scoring 110 or higher jumped from 0.9 % in previous years to 5.5 %, prompting accusations of widespread cheating. Protesters at UNAM’s Mexico City campus chanted “We demand honesty, not artificial intelligence.” An expert estimated that at least half of the participants cheated. In response, UNAM announced that about 58,000 students will have to retake the exam and that the admission process will be redone under the direction of rector Leonardo Lomelí.
