Mexico City: Suspect in 2016 Paola Buenrostro murder detained
Arturo 'N' has been detained in Nicolásero, State of Mexico, nearly a decade after the 2016 murder of Paola Buenrostro in Mexico City. The suspect, who had been a fugitive since his initial release following the crime, has been placed in pretrial detention.
During the initial hearing, a judge ordered the case to be processed as aggravated homicide rather than transfeminicide. This decision has sparked intense protests from transgender rights collectives, who accuse the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office (FGJ-CDMX) of institutional transphobia and failing to respect the victim's gender identity. Activists, including Kenya Cuevas, reported that officials used the victim's former masculine name and referred to witnesses using masculine terms during proceedings.
The FGJ-CDMX defended the classification, stating that the legal framework in 2016 was more restrictive and that the crime was originally investigated under a homicide warrant.
