Criminal investigations into homicides in Mexico

Overview

Authorities in Mexico have arrested suspects in connection with high-profile homicide investigations.

In Nuevo León, Arnulfo de Jesús “N” was detained in Guadalupe alongside a woman identified as Ana Julia “N”. While the arrest initially involved charges related to health crimes—including the seizure of marijuana and crystal meth—the suspect is also under investigation for the suspected feminicide of Pamela Yahaira Alvarado Galván. The victim was reportedly attacked in Juárez in July after meeting a man via social media.

In the State of Mexico, Arturo “N” (also identified as Arturo Delgadillo) was located in a rural community in Nicolás Romero and placed in pretrial detention for the 2016 murder of activist Paola Buenrostro. The suspect had been a fugitive since his initial release following the crime.

Following initial legal proceedings where a judge ordered the case to be processed as aggravated homicide rather than transfeminicide, the case drew intense protests. Transgender rights collectives accused the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office (FGJ CDMX) of institutional transphobia, noting that officials used the victim's former masculine name during proceedings.

In a significant legal development, a Mexico City judge has since reclassified the murder from qualified homicide to aggravated feminicide. This shift allows the case to be prosecuted with a gender perspective. The ruling is considered a landmark for the transgender community, as Buenrostro’s murder was the catalyst for the “Paola Buenrostro Law,” approved in July 2024 to specifically criminalize transfeminicide. Activists have celebrated the decision as a major step toward justice and legal recognition of violence against trans women.
