Aruba proposes minimum wage increase amid rising inflation
The Government of Aruba has introduced a plan to increase the minimum wage from Afl. 2,100 to Afl. 2,600 through a three-phase implementation. The initiative aims to reduce poverty and social inequality by narrowing the current gap of approximately Afl. 500 between minimum wages and the actual cost of living.
Paul Rosenmöller, president of the Kingdom Relations Commission (KOREL) of the Dutch Senate, has expressed support for the proposal, noting that economic growth should translate into better living conditions. The plan seeks to ensure that the benefits of the island's tourism-driven economy are more broadly distributed among the population.
Recent data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) indicates that annual inflation in Aruba reached 3.0 percent in September 2026. The monthly subsistence minimum for a family of two adults and two children has risen to Afl. 5,669. Key drivers of these rising costs include health services, which increased by 4.4 percent, and significant spikes in fuel prices, with diesel rising 57.8 percent compared to the previous year.
