Nigeria detains crew of private jet that landed on Asaba road
A foreign‑registered private jet was cleared by air traffic control to land on the runway at Asaba Airport in Delta State, Nigeria, but on 10 June it touched down on a concrete road beside the airfield instead. The incident was described by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo as a serious security breach.
The pilots and cabin crew have been held in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since the landing. Keyamo said the crew left the scene before investigators could examine the aircraft and were later intercepted on arrival in Lagos, where they were taken into DSS detention for rigorous questioning.
The aircraft is registered in the United States, which explains why the pilot, reported to be over 70 years old, exceeds Nigeria’s age limit of 65 for commercial pilots on Nigerian‑registered aircraft.
