Overview

In early July 2026 a private Bombardier Challenger 601‑3A operated by VMO Aero touched down on a construction road beside Asaba Airport in Delta State. All seven occupants escaped injury and the jet later taxied off the road to Lagos. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau identified runway‑identification errors and cockpit disagreement as primary causes and found no mechanical fault.

The investigation was transferred to the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), which on 15 July suspended the pilot‑in‑command and first officer, grounded the aircraft and withdrew its Permit for Non‑Commercial Flight. The suspensions remain in effect pending the outcome of the inquiries, which also involve the Department of State Services (DSS).

By 30 July the crew – pilots and cabin staff – were taken into DSS custody and labeled a “serious security breach” by Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo. Authorities noted the jet is U.S.‑registered and the captain, aged over 70, exceeds Nigeria’s age limit for pilots on Nigerian‑registered aircraft. The NCAA has kept the jet grounded, and the investigation will be reported to the President.
