Asahi Linux adds official support for Apple M3 chips

Asahi Linux developers have officially announced support for Apple M3-powered Macs, including M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chips. This milestone brings the M3 generation close to the level of support seen in previous M1 and M2 hardware, though the Mac Studio M3 Ultra remains unsupported.

Despite the progress, several significant hardware limitations persist. GPU acceleration is currently neither performant nor power-efficient enough for heavy 3D workloads. Additionally, the lack of Display Controller Port (DCP) support means that sleep mode is unavailable and the HDMI ports on M3 MacBook models are non-functional.

Developers are working on addressing these gaps, including complex audio driver engineering and power management challenges. While basic support is available in the Asahi Linux downstream release, further integration and driver improvements are expected in upcoming Linux kernel versions, such as 7.4.
