Asaman Tamfoe mining incident leaves seven dead in Ghana
At least seven people died following a collapse at a mining site in Asaman Tamfoe, located in the Atewa East District of Ghana's Eastern Region. The incident occurred around 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
Initial reports indicate that the collapse involved a mining pit used in search of gold, burying 11 miners. While rescue teams from the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), and local police successfully retrieved seven bodies, four individuals were reported feared trapped underground. Of the deceased, five were identified as residents of Moseaso and two as residents of Asaman Tamfoe.
However, Ernest Owusu Ntim, the District Chief Executive for Atiwa East, has disputed the description of the site as an active mining pit. He stated that the area had undergone reclamation one to two years ago and was not an operational mining site. According to the DCE, the victims were allegedly attempting to dig beneath a hill in the reclaimed area when a large quantity of sand collapsed on them. He further rejected claims that any individuals remain trapped underground, noting that all seven bodies had been recovered and transported to a hospital.
