Mining pit fatalities in Ghana

Overview

Fatalities have occurred in Ghana due to collapses at mining sites. In the Ashanti Region, at least 23 people, including 11 children, died after falling into abandoned, uncovered pits left by illegal miners. Most victims were local residents, such as farmers, navigating paths to their fields. In response, the Regional Security Council and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources began reclaiming abandoned pits and removing structures from forest reserves.

In the Eastern Region, a separate incident in Asaman Tamfoe resulted in at least seven deaths following a collapse at a mining site on August 29, 2026. While initial reports suggested a gold mining pit buried 11 people, the District Chief Executive for Atiwa East, Ernest Owusu Ntim, disputed that the site was an active mining pit. He stated the area had undergone reclamation one to two years prior and that the victims were allegedly attempting to dig beneath a hill in the reclaimed area when sand collapsed on them.

On September 3, 2026, another collapse occurred in Manso Keniago, located in the Amansie South District of the Ashanti Region. Reports indicate that approximately 12 male miners were working in an illegal mining pit when it collapsed. While four individuals escaped without injury, seven bodies have been retrieved, including one victim identified by the nickname ‘Chinchilla’. Rescue efforts involving the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), local police, and community volunteers are continuing to search for one remaining individual believed to be trapped underground.
