Ascoli Piceno introduces citywide smart waste bin program

Starting Thursday 2 July, the municipality of Ascoli Piceno in Italy will roll out a new waste‑collection system that replaces traditional containers for dry non‑recyclable waste with smart bins across the entire city.

Residents registered with the local waste tariff (TARI) will open the bins by tapping their health‑card or using the “APP4AP” smartphone application. In condominiums with more than eight households the smart bins are placed near each address; smaller buildings must use a street‑side mastello during the night hours of 21:00‑04:00 on Thursdays. The system records each deposit, enabling better tracking and aiming to improve recycling rates and reduce improper waste disposal. The initiative is a joint effort of the municipal administration, Ascoli Servizi Comunali and Ecoinnova, and includes a tolerance period to help citizens become familiar with the new process.
