Asda rolls out electronic shelf labels across UK Express stores
Asda has completed the installation of electronic shelf-edge labels across its 517 Express stores in the UK. The project involved an investment of more than £7.5 million and the rollout of 1.2 million electronic labels, replacing over 120,000 paper labels used weekly.
The new system displays pricing, unit costs, weights, and promotional information. For certain products, such as bakery items, the labels will also provide ingredient and allergen details. Matt Harrison, Asda Express central operations director, stated that the move aims to modernize stores and free up staff from manual pricing tasks to focus on customer service and store standards.
In addition to the label rollout, Asda is currently trialing shelf-edge availability cameras in five larger stores. These cameras monitor stock levels and notify staff of gaps or misplaced items. The company plans to expand this camera technology more widely in the coming months.
