European retailers adopting electronic shelf labels

Overview

Major European grocery retailers are adopting electronic shelf labels (ESLs) to modernize operations and improve pricing accuracy.

In the United Kingdom, Asda has completed a rollout of approximately 1.2 million digital labels across its 517 Express convenience stores and petrol stations. This £7.5 million investment replaces over 120,000 paper labels used weekly, allowing staff to focus on customer service and store standards. The technology provides pricing, unit costs, weights, and promotional information, as well as enhanced ingredient or allergen details for specific products like bakery items. As part of its technological updates, Asda is also testing shelf-edge availability cameras in five larger stores to monitor stock levels and notify staff of gaps or misplaced items, with plans for wider expansion.

In Spain, Alcampo is deploying over 560,000 ESLs across 84 supermarkets, an initiative expected to reduce paper consumption and CO2 emissions. Additionally, Tesco has announced plans to roll out electronic labels across roughly 3,000 stores over the next two years following a successful proof of concept.
