ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meet Myanmar Counterpart in Bangkok
Foreign ministers of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) will hold an informal meeting with Myanmar’s foreign minister in Bangkok on July 12, chaired by the Philippines as ASEAN’s current chair. The gathering aims to discuss the ongoing civil war in Myanmar, explore ways to re‑engage the country after its exclusion from ASEAN summits since the 2021 coup, and consider concrete steps for violence cessation, dialogue and humanitarian aid.
Myanmar’s army‑backed government, led by former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing, seeks to lift the ban on its senior officials imposed after the coup. The discussion will also address the stalled "five‑point consensus" peace plan that the military has yet to implement, a key issue that has strained relations with the bloc. The conflict has killed over 100,000 people and displaced millions, underscoring the urgency of the talks.
