ASEAN Law Forum 2026 addresses AI in legal systems

The ASEAN Law Forum 2026 concluded in Hanoi, focusing on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in law-making and enforcement within the digital era. The forum brought together high-ranking officials, including Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Lê Tiến Châu, justice ministers, and representatives from various ASEAN member states and international organizations such as the European Union and the United Nations.

Deputy Prime Minister Lê Tiến Châu emphasized that while rapid advancements in AI and big data present increased risks, they also offer expanded opportunities for breakthroughs. He noted that a transparent and stable legal system is essential for building trust among citizens and businesses and for ensuring the safe application of new technologies.

Discussions throughout the forum covered strategic issues including national AI sovereignty, regional AI governance, and human-centric approaches to technology. Participants explored how AI can enhance state governance and judicial efficiency through legal research, policy development, and the creation of national legal databases.
