ASEAN Media Forum Calls for Responsible AI Use to Preserve Credibility

At the 10th ASEAN Media Forum in Manila on July 30, media leaders discussed the impact of artificial intelligence on journalism. Speakers highlighted that AI can streamline data collection, translation, and content production, but stressed that editorial decisions must remain human‑led to maintain credibility.

Akhyari Hananto, founder of Good News from Indonesia, cited increased readership after integrating AI into his newsroom, while warning that AI‑generated “hallucinations” risk spreading false information. Experts urged rigorous fact‑checking and cross‑verification of sources. ASEAN’s Information and Media Work Programme for 2026‑2035 was referenced as prioritising the protection of information integrity, responsible AI adoption, capacity‑building for journalists, and public media literacy.

Noel Hidalgo Tan of the ASEAN Secretariat’s Culture and Information Division emphasized that in an era of rapid misinformation, the core strength of media is credibility rather than speed.
