Cockroach Janta Party faces detentions and protest bans in India

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) is facing significant legal and police friction across India following its campaign against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

In Guwahati, Assam Police detained over 30 CJP workers, including co-convener Ashutosh Ranka, ahead of a regional meeting. The party alleges the detention was an attempt to suppress their investigation into government school conditions, man-made floods, and alleged electoral roll irregularities. The meeting venue was reportedly moved from Assam Shree Parshuram Seva Sadan to Chowdhury Tila after management withdrew permission under pressure.

In Mumbai, the CJP has announced a 'Jail Bharo Andolan' scheduled for October 2, Gandhi Jayanti, after Mumbai Police denied permission for a protest at Shivaji Park. Authorities cited the area as a 'silence zone' and noted they lacked the authority to grant permission due to a 2013 Bombay High Court order.

Activist Sonam Wangchuk has expressed support for the CJP’s push for electoral accountability. Meanwhile, the Election Commission has defended its processes, stating that all decisions regarding the SIR received unanimous approval from its three commissioners.
