Asia projected to lead global maritime transport leadership

A report by Kapa Research, based on a survey of 314 shipowners and maritime executives, indicates a shift in perceived leadership within the global maritime transport sector toward Asia. According to the findings, 76 percent of participants believe the East will be the most influential force in maritime transport in the coming years, compared to only 17 percent who identify the West—including the United States, the European Union, Japan, and Canada—as the primary center of influence.

China is highlighted as a dominant player, with 69 percent of respondents identifying it as the world's leading shipbuilding nation and 72 percent attributing the greatest economic weight in global maritime transport to the country. While China leads in shipbuilding and fleet competitiveness, Greece remains the primary reference for maritime management and expertise.

The shift in influence occurs amid significant geopolitical uncertainty. Executives identified the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Red Sea and Middle East as the primary challenges currently facing the industry. Despite these issues, 94 percent of respondents maintain a positive outlook for the future of their companies.
