Asian Black Bear Captured After Four-Day Utsunomiya School Closures

An Asian black bear was sighted more than ten times in the city of Utsunomiya, north of Tokyo, triggering a citywide alert that led authorities to close all 94 elementary and middle schools as a precaution. After four days of heightened vigilance, a team sedated the bear with a tranquiliser dart and, following a 1‑hour‑40‑minute operation, transferred the animal onto a truck for relocation.

The incident highlights a rise in bear‑human encounters across Japan, which the Environment Ministry attributes to reduced forest food sources, climate‑related changes and depopulation of rural areas that push wildlife toward urban environments.
