Asian rice prices hit one-year high amid weather concerns

Asian rice prices have reached one-year highs, driven by El Nino-related weather concerns and shifting supply dynamics. In India, export prices for 5% broken rice have risen to between 366 and 371 USD per ton, as traders warn of the weakest monsoon in 20 years. Thailand has seen prices for 5% broken rice climb to 465 USD per ton, fueled by strong demand from the Philippines. Meanwhile, Vietnamese 5% broken rice is trading in the range of 438 to 442 USD per ton.

In the Mekong Delta, producers are monitoring water levels in the Mekong River, fearing low flow will reduce silt deposits and impact future crop yields. In response to rising costs, the government of Bangladesh is considering tightening export controls or banning exports of fragrant rice to stabilize its domestic market.

On the global stage, wheat prices on the Chicago Board of Trade have hit a three-year high, exacerbated by escalating tensions in the Black Sea region.
