Asiatic lion population in Gujarat rises to 891

On World Lion Day, reports from India indicate a significant increase in the Asiatic lion population. A recent census conducted by the Gujarat government estimates there are now 891 individuals, up from 674 in 2020.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that the conservation of these lions is part of a broader effort to protect the entire ecosystem, including forests, water sources, and agriculture. He credited a specialized conservation model involving modern technology, scientific research, and community participation for this success. Notably, the lion's range has expanded from three to 11 districts over the last two and a half decades, with a recent return to the Barda Hills after 143 years.

Despite this progress, experts from the WWF warn that the species remains vulnerable due to its restricted geographic range in Gujarat. This concentration makes the population susceptible to genetic issues, epidemics, and extreme climate events. While the Asiatic lion shows signs of recovery, the situation for African lions remains critical, with populations having declined by approximately 50% over the last 25 years due to habitat loss and human conflict.
