Italian regions roll out health initiatives to cut costs and expand services
From 3 August 2026 the Puglia regional health authority will embed a software alert in doctors' and pharmacies' computers that flags cheaper equivalent medicines, a measure aimed at reducing the region’s pharmaceutical spending by more than €100 million.
In Bari, the ASL opened a new Proximity Ambulatory Service in Altamura on 30 July 2026. Operating twice a month, the centre is part of the National Health‑Equity Programme 2021‑2027 and targets socially vulnerable groups such as the homeless, low‑income families and migrants.
Tuscany’s “Botteghe della Salute” project will run health kiosks in Lastra a Signa, Carmignano, Vaiano and Cantagallo, offering assistance with electronic health records, appointments, ticket payments and social‑service applications. The scheme is co‑financed 55 % by the Region, 20 % by Anci Toscana and 25 % by local municipalities.
In Lombardy, the newly expanded Ospedale di Comunità di San Giovanni Bianco now provides 20 beds after a €1.699 million investment from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, forming part of a broader community‑health network.
Finally, the SOS PEOPLE project launched in Tricase by AIL Lecce together with the Fondazione Cardinale Giovanni Panico invests €315 000 (including €155 000 from AIL Lecce) to upgrade hematology services, obtain CNT accreditation and enable the delivery of advanced CAR‑T cell therapies.
