ASML economic impact in Netherlands rises amid AI demand

ASML is seeing increased economic significance in the Netherlands, with ING economists estimating its direct contribution to the Dutch economy could reach 1.6% in 2026, up from 1.3% in 2025. The company has become Europe's most valuable firm, with a market capitalization of approximately 547 billion euros.

Driven by robust demand for AI chips, ASML reports strong order interest extending through 2030. To meet this demand, the company plans to increase capacity by 30% in 2027 and an additional 30% in 2028. Consequently, ASML intends to raise machine prices starting in 2027.

Despite this growth, risks remain. ING warned of a ‘Nokia effect,’ noting the danger of a national economy becoming overly dependent on a single large corporation. Additionally, ASML faces geopolitical risks from US-led export restrictions to China and potential domestic labor shortages in high-end engineering and technical roles.
