Asopos River: Vibrio bacteria detected in Greek waters

The Panhellenic Center for Ecological Research (PAKOE) has issued a warning regarding the water quality of the Asopos River in Greece. Research findings indicate the presence of bacteria from the Vibrio genus in several locations, including Oinofyta, Sykamino, Oropos, and the river's mouth.

While the detection of Vibrio bacteria does not immediately confirm the presence of the specific strain that causes cholera (Vibrio cholerae), PAKOE has called for urgent action. The organization is urging authorities to conduct new tests, investigate potential sewage leaks, and implement measures to protect public health.

The Region of Central Greece and the Municipality of Tanagra have initiated targeted sampling and laboratory testing. This includes checking the drinking water network in Oinofyta and the surface waters of the Asopos River. Authorities have noted that specialized laboratory tests and statistical evaluation are required to determine the exact species and strain of the bacteria found.
