Vibrio bacteria detection in Asopos River
Overview
The Panhellenic Center for Ecological Research (PAKOE) issued a warning regarding the water quality of the Asopos River in Greece after detecting Vibrio genus bacteria at five out of twelve sampling points. These locations include Oinofyta, Sykamino, Oropos, and the river mouth.
While the presence of Vibrio colonies was confirmed, PAKOE stated that specialized laboratory testing is necessary to determine if the specific strain ‘Vibrio cholerae’ is present. In Oinofyta, two different types of colonies were recorded, whereas the other positive sites showed a single type. PAKOE noted that current results do not confirm the presence of specific pathogenic strains, such as O1 or O139, which are responsible for epidemics.
In response to these findings, the Region of Central Greece and the Municipality of Tanagra have initiated targeted sampling and laboratory testing. These efforts include monitoring the surface waters of the Asopos River and checking the drinking water network in Oinofyta. Authorities emphasized that specialized laboratory tests and statistical evaluation are required to identify the exact species and strain of the bacteria.
PAKOE has called for urgent investigations into potential sewage leaks, industrial runoff, or agricultural runoff, and has advised residents to avoid the affected areas due to the potential risks of gastrointestinal or wound infections.
