ASP di Siracusa invests 5.5 million euros in medical technology upgrades

The ASP di Siracusa has launched a technological modernization plan exceeding 5.5 million euros to upgrade medical equipment across its hospital and territorial healthcare structures. A central component of this initiative is the installation of a new digital PET/TC scanner at the Umberto I Hospital in Syracuse, which is expected to be operational by December 2026.

The new PET/TC technology is designed to handle over 2,400 exams annually, meeting an estimated local demand of approximately 2,149 procedures. The equipment offers significant clinical advantages, including reducing scan times to 10–12 minutes and lowering the required dose of radiopharmaceuticals. These advancements are expected to benefit oncology patients by improving staging, treatment evaluation, and follow-up procedures.

In addition to the PET/TC scanner, the plan includes upgrading the hospital’s magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system, which has been in service for approximately fifteen years. The broader investment also covers the acquisition of 70 electrocardiographs, 90 defibrillator monitors, and new multidisciplinary ultrasound machines. These upgrades aim to reduce waiting times and eliminate the need for patients to travel outside the province for specialized diagnostic services.
