Aspen Acres Fire Overwhelms Colorado Communities and Animal Rescue Efforts
The Aspen Acres Fire, now the seventh‑largest wildfire in Colorado history, has scorched more than 99,000 acres across Pueblo and Custer counties and destroyed over 300 homes. The blaze forced mandatory evacuations and threatened hundreds of additional structures, while several other fires continue to burn in the state.
The Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region has taken in 427 animals displaced by the fire, providing food, veterinary care, and temporary shelter. Volunteers and staff work around the clock to care for dogs, cats, rabbits and even snakes until owners can retrieve their pets.
State lawmakers have enacted insurance reforms to aid affected homeowners. House Bill 25‑1322 requires insurers to supply policy copies within three business days, and House Bill 22‑1111 mandates coverage of at least 65 % of household contents for destroyed primary residences. Insurance Commissioner Mike Conway urged residents to document losses with photos and receipts to streamline claims and highlighted upcoming guidelines for evacuation‑related expenses.
