Assam and Northeast India address inter-state transport safety and service resumption

The Assam government has met with cab operators and transporters to address safety concerns regarding travel to Meghalaya. The discussions follow recent violence during a student rally in Shillong on August 19, which resulted in injuries to 16 people and damage to at least 31 vehicles. Following the incident, traffic blockades occurred between the two states, though recent ministerial-level talks between Assam and Meghalaya aim to prevent future recurrences of attacks on Assam-registered vehicles and drivers.

Separately, inter-state bus services between Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam along the Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati route have resumed for a third consecutive day. This marks the first time such services have operated regularly in over three years. Despite local tensions in Senapati District, security forces and administrative interventions have ensured the safe movement of passengers traveling via National Highway-2.
