Manipur transport and connectivity restoration

Overview

Following a period of crisis and road blockades in Manipur, the state government initiated steps to restore connectivity. In early August, authorities announced the immediate reopening of National Highways to all communities and the resumption of the Imphal-Dimapur bus service to alleviate hardships in trade, healthcare, and essential supplies.

By late August, public transport services on the Imphal–Dimapur–Guwahati route officially resumed after a nearly three-year hiatus. On the first day of service, 125 passengers traveled via two buses and five wingers. As these inter-state bus services between Manipur, Nagaland, and Assam entered their third consecutive day of regular operation, security forces and administrative interventions have worked to ensure safe movement via National Highway-2, despite local tensions in Senapati District.

While the resumption marks a return toward normalcy, stakeholders continue to highlight the need for improved regional infrastructure. Concerns persist regarding the quality of the railway network connecting Dimapur, Guwahati, and Tinsukia, specifically regarding coach maintenance and the adequacy of train frequency. Such infrastructure remains a vital lifeline for residents across Nagaland, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Mizoram, providing essential access to healthcare, education, and employment.
