Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma monitors Lakhimpur embankment crisis

A 120‑metre stretch of the Brahmaputra embankment at Bonpuroi‑Jamuguri in Assam's Lakhimpur district developed cracks as rising water levels and strong currents threatened a breach. The Water Resources Department deployed geo‑bags and “porcupine” sand‑bag barriers to reinforce the section, part of an Asian Development Bank‑assisted flood‑risk project.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said he is closely monitoring the situation and has directed officials to keep him updated. Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah visited the erosion‑hit area, reviewed emergency works, and instructed a technical survey and cost estimate for permanent restoration. Both officials praised the rapid coordination of district authorities and local residents that averted a major disaster.

Floodwaters continue to inundate villages across western Lakhimpur and neighboring Dhakuakhana, with rivers from the Arunachal hills adding to the swelling.
