Assam flood response measures

In July 2026, Assam authorities began an emergency desiltation operation in Guwahati to alleviate worsening waterlogging caused by rising river levels. The effort marked the start of a coordinated flood‑mitigation push across the state.

By early August, the focus shifted to Lakhimpur district, where a 120‑metre stretch of the Brahmaputra embankment showed cracks under high water and strong currents. The state’s Water Resources Department deployed geo‑bags and sand‑bag barriers, while Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Finance Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah monitored the situation, ordered technical surveys and cost estimates, and praised rapid local coordination. The progression from city‑level desiltation to emergency embankment reinforcement illustrates Assam’s escalating response to severe monsoon flooding.

Both actions are part of broader flood‑risk management initiatives supported by the Asian Development Bank, aiming to prevent breaches and protect vulnerable villages in western Lakhimpur and surrounding areas.
