Assam flood relief: CM estimates 1,000 crore rupee rehabilitation cost
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the state may require over 1,000 crore rupees for the rehabilitation of families and repair of properties damaged by recent severe flooding. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has pledged central support for the process under the Post-Disaster Needs Assessment framework.
A rapid relief assessment drive, launched on August 9, has already covered over 8,000 families, with preliminary damage estimates reaching 150 crore rupees. The survey is expected to continue until August 30 and aims to reach between 50,000 and 60,000 affected families in Upper Assam. To ensure transparency and accuracy, the government is implementing a three-layered verification process, including a second round of assessments conducted by teachers from September 1 to September 10.
In addition to individual relief, the government has released 11.3 crore rupees to rebuild 494 damaged Anganwadi centers in Upper Assam, with each center receiving up to 2.5 lakh rupees. The Indian Ports Association has also contributed 5 crore rupees to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. To improve coordination, technology-driven initiatives like the Banpani.org platform and mobile application surveys are being utilized to map relief requirements and track rehabilitation efforts.
