Northeast India floods: death toll 31, millions affected

Overview

Flash floods that began in Arunachal Pradesh in late June have continued to batter the northeast, expanding across Assam and into neighboring states. By mid‑July, over 130 000 people were displaced, highways and rail lines were shut, and the state government kept dam gates open while accelerating drainage work.

The situation worsened through July, and on 21 July the Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported a death toll of 31, with 21 fatalities recorded in a single 24‑hour period. The worst‑hit district was Sivasagar (13 deaths), followed by Charaideo, Golaghat and Jorhat. The floods now affect about 5.64 lakh (≈5.6 million) residents in 16 districts and 872 villages. Relief camps number between 71 and 101, sheltering roughly 9 600‑12 300 displaced persons, while 202 distribution centres dispense food and water.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has inspected the hardest‑hit areas and announced an ex‑gratia of Rs 4 lakh per deceased victim. Rescue efforts continue with the Indian Army, Air Force, NDRF, SDRF and police. The state has activated intra‑circle mobile roaming, sought additional central assistance, and monitors river levels that remain above danger marks.

Health officials remain on high alert, and flood‑mitigation measures, including sand‑bagging and dam‑gate management, are being intensified as water levels stay high.
