Assam floods: Death toll rises to 107; 1.37 million affected

Overview

Monsoon floods in Assam have caused at least 107 deaths and affected approximately 1.37 million people across 10 districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reports that flooding has impacted 456 villages and submerged nearly 11,933 hectares of agricultural land, with Golaghat and Sivasagar reporting the highest numbers of affected residents and inundated farmland.

Meteorologist Prof BN Goswami has warned that the state’s climate crisis is becoming increasingly difficult to reverse, attributing worsening conditions to unplanned urbanization, hill destruction, loss of tree canopy, and increased sedimentation in the Brahmaputra River. These factors have contributed to landslides and urban flooding in Guwahati.

Relief and rehabilitation efforts are expanding. In Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Jorhat, Moon Ali Goria of the Goria-Moria-Desi organization has been working to restore religious sites by providing replacement texts to damaged temples, namghars, and mosques. Logistical hurdles persist, though Bihubar Tea Estate authorities issued an apology after a relief team led by Samay Gogoi was allegedly blocked from transporting bamboo poles for house reconstruction.

To address long-term recovery, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to discuss flood relief and rural development. Following assessments indicating that floods have affected an estimated 26,681 houses—resulting in approximately ₹480 crore in damages—the Union Minister provided approval letters for roughly ₹5,000 crore in residential housing under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin.

While West Bengal has announced ₹10 crore in assistance and local foundations have pledged ₹2.25 crore for vulnerable families in Upper Assam, the scale of the destruction to villages and cropland continues to necessitate significant long-term preventative measures. Currently, 125 relief facilities are established to support displaced residents as authorities continue rescue operations using medical teams and boats.
