Assam flood impacts over 22,000 people, Amit Shah pledges central assistance

Union Home Minister Amit Shah called Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to assure the state of all possible assistance as the first wave of floods swept through six districts, affecting 22,124 people. The most severely hit district, Dhemaji, reported 15,483 residents under water, with 96 villages submerged, nearly 1,690 hectares of agricultural land damaged and 48,199 livestock affected.

Heavy rainfall also caused the partial collapse of a railway bridge over the Simen River in Dhemaji, prompting the Northeast Frontier Railway to suspend train services between Archipathar and Simen Chapari stations. Relief and rehabilitation operations are underway, while authorities remain on alert for continued rainfall and rising river levels.

The state disaster management authority highlighted the Disang River flowing above danger levels in Sivasagar district, raising concerns of further inundation. The central government’s commitment to support the relief effort was publicly acknowledged by the chief minister on social media.
