Assam CM Himanta Sarma Announces Rs500 cr Dibrugarh capital project and raises MLA fund

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the Assam government will create a State Capital Region Development Authority to develop Dibrugarh as a second capital, allocating Rs 500 crore over five years for infrastructure within a 20‑km radius.

In a separate announcement, Sarma increased the MLA Area Development Fund from Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore for the current financial year, with plans to raise it to Rs 2 crore annually from next year. About 90 % of the fund will support infrastructure, while up to 10 % can be used for public‑welfare items such as school benches, laptops and ambulances. The state legislative assembly’s Budget Session will begin on July 6 to pass the full budget and regularise scheme funding from August 1.
