Assam faces five-day heavy rain alert as IMD warns of floods

India's Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast of widespread moderate to heavy rainfall across most of Assam for the next five days. The agency warns that several districts could experience heavy rain, thunderstorms and lightning, with particular risk for low‑lying areas.

Recent measurements show up to 20 cm of rain in Pandu (Kamarup), 17 cm in Kukurma Mira, 14 cm at Guwahati airport and similar totals in Golaghat, Dhubri and other districts. Continued rain could worsen river‑bank flooding and water‑logging in already vulnerable zones.

State officials have urged residents to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow local advisories on flood hazards, reduced visibility, lightning and road disruptions. Disaster‑management teams are closely monitoring the situation.
